Thank you for your comments, YAIRW.

Yes, I realize a lot of straight people are walking out. I was simply supposing that there might be some people in the situation I describe—that is, gay people who are out at school but not at home. In so far as the argument is based on my speculation, it may be, as you point out, “real weak.”

A friend of mine pointed out to me that my argument on this point is a red herring. (Incidentally, this friend is a member of the GLBT community with which I “obviously . . . have NO experience.”) I take the point that straight people will also be walking and thus, according to my words, "outing themselves." I could have been clearer on this point.

I'm not sure where I “assume all gay people share the same views.” If I did this, it would be a mistake of epic proportion. I apologize if I've given the wrong impression on this point. I also do not “assume . . . that people will be outed by walking out because no one except gay people oppose [sic] bigotry.” (Emphasis added.) I'm not even sure what that means.

You do realize that a LOT of straight people are walking out too?

Almost all the protest planning and opposition to Portman is being run by heterosexual allies.

It's interesting you assume all gay people share the same views and that people will be outed by walking out because no one except gay people oppose bigotry. I think that's a pretty weak argument, and obviously you have NO experience with either the GLBT community or the amazing allies here at Michigan.
